As told in this thread on DokuWiki forum, struct plugin comes with a lot of new cool stuff. It would be useful to make datatemplate working with struct, as it already works with data plugin.
Probably, people using data plugin (as they know it) will continue to use it and will come slowly to struct. But new DokuWiki users or new db users in DokuWiki like me, have the chance to begin with something more simple and powerful, so I think they will adopt directly struct first.
Datatemplate could evolve with struct following the UX improvments wave, imho.

I can help by testing a datatemplate 's dev branch on local wiki, giving feed-back, bringing ideas... if so.

Another way could be to fork to another plugin, like structtemplate, to avoid confusion and mixing different usages ...
Also, at the moment I really know nothing about struct.
