Had some great conversations at Cosmoverse that convinced me this is needed. DAOs should be able to cw20 or native tokens for voting.

One step closer with: #122

A similar staking contract could be used that is specialized for native tokens.

Spoke with @JakeHartnell on this, talked about a feature to increase decentralisation by rebalancing among validators, maybe a whitelisted set that can be update appropriately?

Sounds like a good idea for an initial approach.
