FOSDEM 2024 - Public Code and DPGs devroom

We are happy to announce that the call for participation in the FOSDEM 2024 devroom for Public Code and Digital Public Goods has opened.

It’s a devroom dedicated to everyone developing public code and DPGs! We’re looking for contributions that fit within the main theme of the devroom. We welcome submissions from projects that have never been to FOSDEM before, as well as from ‘old timers’.

• 💬 Types of talk slots: 30 minutes session & 10 minute lightning talk
• 🌍 When and where: Saturday, 3 February 2024 in Brussels, Belgium.
• ⏰ Deadline for applications: 1 December 2023.
• 🙋 Format: You must be available in person to present your talk.

Below are some questions to inspire your proposal:

• Have you tried to replicate or co-develop a codebase with another public organization? what did you learn along the way?
• Do you have any procurement or governance models (or hacks!) that helped you use, reuse, or co-develop public code or a digital public good?
• Are you working on or using an amazing DPG or public code project with strong reuse potential that everyone should know about?

Looking forward to seeing DPGA friends at FOSDEM! The Fedora Project will continue our many-year tradition of having a stand and co-wrangling the (Linux) Distributions Devroom in February.

I asked this in email, but I will repeat it here for the benefit of anyone else who might have a similar question:

Are you working on or using an amazing DPG or public code project with strong reuse potential that everyone should know about?

Could you give an example of what kind of story you want to know more about? This would help frame any submission either myself or a colleague might land there about Fedora.

Edit: One possible idea I have for a talk idea is about the story of becoming a Digital Public Good for Fedora. Fedora is the only Linux distribution represented in the DPG registry. What inspired Fedora to become a DPG and how did we do it? How might others follow our lead, in the spirit of our Four Foundations: Freedom, Friends, Features, First?

Hi @jwflory, in general, we are open to submissions from anyone who wants to share more about technical/ non-technical aspects of their DPG/ Public Code-related work. This could be anything from how to overcome a specific technical challenge, to telling a success story of implementation or positive impact.

Mainly what we are trying to avoid is a product or organization pitch, and try to aim for something with a bit more substance that other attendees can relate to and take part in the discussion.

The Fedora Linux DPG journey is a good example, some others might be:

• How DPGs are being used by governments to build nation-wide digital ID systems.
• What is required for a local NGO to adopt certain DPGs for crisis response or humanitarian causes?
• Building for interoperability and using open standards in the digital healthcare space.
• Etc.

Hey there! Excited to catch up with the DPGA crew at FOSDEM. We have submitted a proposal for Glific. Glific is an open-source two-way communication platform for the social sector. Currently it's been used by 100+ non-profits to communicate with their communities in an impactful and economical way.

We (i.e. Glific, continuing @AkhileshNegi post above) can chat about:

• How we build communities within the social sector for our platforms
• Our quarterly sprints, what we do, why we think its important
• How we collaborate to crowd source features for our platform
• Our funding strategy and what we pitch to funders. Our sustainability model
• Tech stacks and tech details if people are interested
• How were worked with CodeForGovtTech India to really jumpstart a bunch of interns and get a lot of PRs into the codebase

@ricardomiron any update or comments on this? We'd love to get our Indian team to explore FOSDEM, but we need confirmation on this so we can apply for visas etc for them, which unfortunately takes some time

Also FYI, Glific is under review for DPG renewal. We do hope it goes thru for this and more :)

We are currently in the process of reviewing the submissions. We will get back with confirmations as soon as we can, and it will be no later than 15 December (as that is the last date to finalize the schedule).
