Since I like making the caps lock an additional control key, in the original place keyboards had the control key long ago, my alternate way of escaping in vi / Vim is with control-C.
That works the same, and in some ways is better because when pressing Escape, vi / Vim has to wait a fraction of a second to see if the Escape was the start of a terminal escape sequence such as for the arrow keys, and when it determines it was not, then it exits edit mode. But with ^C the mode change is immediate.
Of course ^C is two keypresses instead of one, but it's an easy chording when the caps lock is remapped as another control key.
