had 1 stack of coal, 2 chests, and a full stack of cobble when i started a "mine 12 -66 12" command. the turtle mined normal and when about 20 blocks down the square it dove straight down then a little further inward and stopped with no error message

It likely dove straight down to place a chest (places for chests are always allocated at the bottom of the area you are digging). Could it be that it hit bedrock before getting all the way down, which either prevented it from advancing or from placing the chest? (yeah, ik it's been like 5 months)
