Hi, I've built a storymap, added pics, captions, latitude and longtitude co-ordinates through the interactive builder on the hosted version. However the maps itself has disappeared. Also, the number icons don't appear on the map - instead there is just a grey box where the map should be. Appears like the link is broken, but I can't find where to change this - or to alter the base map or add a layer to it. Please help!

Here is my map

Hi,

Sorry for the inconvenience but your webmap is half broken.
One point has invalid coordinates (unzoom the map and you will notice it way up North). If you remove that point (Enable Editing on the layer ; Edit button ; click on the point Delete), the Map Tour will works.
But I noticed that after that ArcGIS.com viewer does not react so well (zoom on layer fail), so it may be safer that you create your Map Tour from a new webmap.

I haven't been able to reproduce the issue. At some point the coordinates of your tour points have been corrupted. Did you notice a weird behavior using the Add screen?

I'm interested by knowing more about the workflow you used. I guess you start using "Start From Scratch"? What was your basemap at that time? Did you change your basemap after/while you were populating the tour? Which browser where you using?

Thanks for your response!

I spent a good part of yesterday rebuilding my storymap, and when it was pretty much finished, I went in to alter the map. I added a new layer on the map

(Coral Reefs in World Heritage Sites:http://tiles.arcgis.com/tiles/8ZpVMShClf8U8dae/arcgis/rest/services/Coral_reefs_in_world_heritage_sites/MapServer)

and then when I went back into the storymap, the amended map had moved my co-ordinates from Australia to South America (saved with the same name), but all the picture links were broken. Thus I had to start all over again, again.

BTW the basemap was just the generic ArcGIS 'Terrain with labels'.

I can not see where or how to edit the map - nor to located the point as per your suggestion?

When I built the story map again, there were still a bunch of bugs. I'd add around 12 points and then half of them would be automatically disabled (so I re-enabled them through the organiser). Adding points was no problem, and all the numbers appeared in the build, but when I went to preview, some of the points would disappear and break (where the map should have been went grey). When I went back in to the build the pics and info were still there, but the points on the map had disappeared and could not be located. There is no feature to add in new co-ordinates in such a case, so I deleted the whole item and re-added it. This happened several times to several points, but as a matter of persistence and elimination, eventually I got all my points in.

When I looked at it this morning on 2 of the problematic storymap builds, 5 of the pics (from 18?!) are there and the points are back in Australia. Another attempt of building this map has now moved my set of co-ordinated to near Papua New Guinea?

Storymap with co-ordinates now in PNG:

Storymap with most of my co-ordinates and items mysteriously missing (there should have been about 18):
http://www.arcgis.com/apps/MapTour/index.html?appid=8624da9ceaf6444f82b7b726d5a54752&webmap=b7a1b69a386b4e618c41f52e7b1c87d5

Finally here it is:

Although I would really like to add a layer with the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park boundary - but I too afraid this will crash my storymap again...

Do you think storymaps are less bug-prone using the source files rather than the web application?

The storymap template should be an easy thing, and had it worked without all the bugs and fails, it would have been done in 30 mins, rather than 2 days. What a shame, I was really excited about doing more with storymaps.

Thanks a lot for taking the time to write all your steps and misadventures. I am really sorry about your bad experience. I will make sure to figure out your issues for next release.

The downloadable version won't be more stable. But there is an alternative way to build your tour that will allow you to use the hosted version and spend a minimum amount of time in the interactive builder. It's to build a CSV that contains your points name/caption and the URL of thumbnail and picture. When you create a new Map Tour, see at the bottom of the screen, you can download an example CSV and you will be able to import it from that same screen.

Another tips, is that you can use 'save as' in ArcGIS.com viewer to duplicate your webmap. After that you would have to publish a new Map Tour for that webmap. That way if something get broken, your original webmap and Map Tour won't be impacted.

Thanks for your help! Hope you are able to smooth out some of these bugs for future updates as storymaps have so much potential!
