The extension does work with TYPO3 9.2 with only a few minor modifications.

What is the current status for TYPO3 9(.x)?

For current projects you are strongly encouraged to use just Flux and avoid Fluidcontent. With a tiny bit of migration you can convert old projects to Flux only - and for new projects there is no need to migrate, just do as you normally would except don't install Fluidcontent.
