Small ship killing passenger while turning

I was flying a very small ship with a cockpit of only 4 blocks and while turning the ship, I stood in one of the corner blocks of the cockpit. That somehow left me out of the ship, floating in the air, and it was impossible to fall or to get back into the ship without unpiloting it. The other time this issue occurred, it led to me suffocating in one of the ship's walls.
