Adding custom search providers is a nice feature. https://github.com/HCL-TECH-SOFTWARE/connections-ui-docs/tree/master/main-areas/search-box
Unfortunatly it overwrites the exsiting ones....
Is there a way to get the predefined searches and a custom provider to work ?

Unfortunately not, and I agree this would be a great addition to make the search customization more useful and extensive. Currently in our backlog.
