<note>After <name type="person" key="KonGis001">Konráð Gíslason</name>'s
death in <date when="1891">1891</date> it transpired that two conjoint
leaves originally belonging to the manuscript had been in his possession.
Catalogued as KG 1, item 2785 in Konráð Gíslason's Collection (<bibl><ref
type="secondary-1" target="KKKat"
>Katalog</ref><biblScope>II</biblScope><biblScope unit="page"
>598</biblScope>
</bibl>). When these two leaves were joined together with the manuscript,
they were foliated as 32<hi rend="sup">bis</hi> and 32<hi rend="sup"
>ter</hi>. A number of miracles were added after the saga, the end of
which is now missing. Fol. 6ra:1-11 was effaced and one of those miracles,
<title>The Danish and the Norwegian Boy</title> was added. Fol. 93r
begins in the middle of the miracle <title>The Epileptic
Woman</title>.</note>

<p>The manuscript was written in <origPlace>Iceland</origPlace>. <name
type="person" key="KriKaa001">Kristian Kålund</name> has dated it to
<date>the second half of the fourteenth century</date> (<bibl>
<ref type="secondary" target="KKKat">Katalog</ref><biblScope
unit="volume">I</biblScope><biblScope unit="pages"
>554</biblScope></bibl>), whereas <name type="person" key="JonLou001"
>Jonna Louis-Jensen</name> (<bibl>
<ref type="secondary" target="tohaandskrJL-J">To håndskrifter fra det
nordvestlige Island</ref>
<biblScope unit="pages">219</biblScope></bibl>) has dated it to <origDate
notBefore="1300" notAfter="1325" cert="high">the first quarter of the
fourteenth century</origDate>.</p>

<item>The first known owner of the codex is <name type="person"
key="DadBja001">Daði Bjarnason</name> of <name type="place"
>Skarð</name> in <name type="place">Skarðströnd</name>, an ancestor
of <name type="person" key="ArnGud001">Árni Gúðmundsson</name> (from
<name type="place">Hóll</name>) in <name type="place"
>Bíldudalur</name>. A marginal note on fol. <locus>94v</locus>
reads: <q xml:lang="is">Dadi Biarna son a <lb/> þessa olafs
sogu</q>.</item>

<name type="person" key="ArnMag001">Árni Magnússon</name> also noted
in <ref>AM 435 a 4to</ref>, <locus>fol. 42v</locus>, that the
manuscript belonged to Árni Gúðmundsson from Bíldudalur and his
ancestors: <q xml:lang="is">er komin fra Arna Gudmundzsyne <lb/> i
Billdudal hvers langfedga eign <lb/> hun hafde vered</q>.</item>
<item>Árni Gúðmundsson gave it to <name type="person" key="JonErl002">Jón
Erlendsson</name> who at that time lived in <name type="place"
>Garpsdalur</name> and later at <name type="place">Kambur</name> in
<name type="place" key="Króks01">Króksfjörður</name> (<name
type="place">Barðaströnd</name>).</item>
<item>The next owner was the Danish prefect <name type="person"
key="ChrMyl001">Christian Müller</name> of <name type="place"
key="BesBes01">Bessastaðir</name> (in <country key="IS"
>Iceland</country>
<date from="1688" to="1703">1688-1703</date>, ✝ <date when="1720"
>1720</date>). <name type="person" key="TorJon001">Torfi
Jónsson</name> of <name type="place">Flatey</name> acted as an
intermediary who tricked the book from Jón Erlendsson by promising him
money for it, which he never paid.</item>
</list> Árni Magnússon notes that when in the possession of Jón Erlendsson
only four leaves were missing from the codex, and that the lacuna was filled
in with leaves with text written by <name type="person" key="JonOla009">Jón
Ólafsson</name> of <name type="place">Lambavatn</name>. The three leaves
(the number four must be a mistake) are now preserved in <ref type="ms">AM
325 XI 2 4to</ref> <!-- what number? -->. Árni presumed that the great loss of text happened
when it was owned by Christian Müller, because Árni borrowed a printed book
from Müller where some leaves of the manuscript served as a binding for it.
Árni then replaced the leaves and kept them.</p>
<p>According to one of the AM-slips and <ref type="ms" target="#AM04-0435-a-en">AM 435 a, 4to</ref>;
fols 35-36 once belonged to Christian Müller at <name type="place"
>Þingeyrar</name> who gave it to the priest <name type="person"
key="OlaEir001">Ólafur Eiríksson</name> of <name type="place"
>Hjaltastaður</name> who in his turn gave it to <name type="person"
key="PetBjo001">Pétur Björnsson yngri</name>, a son of <name
type="person" key="BjoPet002">Björn Péturson</name> of <name type="place"
key="BurVop01">Burstarfell</name>.</p>

<p>Árni Magnússon did not succeed in gathering all the leaves that existed. Two
conjoint leaves (32<hi rend="sup">bis</hi> and 32<hi rend="sup">ter</hi>)
seem to have been kept on <country key="IS">Iceland</country>,
but were taken to <name type="place" key="Copen01" xml:lang="en"
>Copenhagen</name> by the student <name type="person" key="HogEin001"
>Högni Einarsson</name> who matriculated at the University of Copenhagen
in <date when="1828">1828</date>. He gave them to another Icelandic student,
<name type="person" key="ThoHel002">Þorsteinn Helgason</name>, who at
that time was working on the edition of <title>Fornmanna sögur</title>. On
fol. 32<hi rend="sup">bis</hi>r the following is written: <q xml:lang="da"
>Mig foræret af Studios. Hogni Einarsson. 1828. Th. Helgason</q> and <q
xml:lang="la">deinde possessor St. Th.</q> The history of the conjoint
leaves fol. 32<hi rend="sup">bis</hi> and 32<hi rend="sup">ter</hi> remained
unknown until the death of <name type="person" key="KonGis001">Konráð
Gíslason</name>, when his collection of manuscripts was transferred to
<name type="org" xml:lang="en">The Arnamagnæan Collection</name>.</p>

<name type="person" key="ArnMag001">Árni Magnússon</name> got the codex from
different places: <list>
<item>The majority of the manuscript comes from the Prefect <name
type="person" key="ChrMyl001">Christian Müller</name>, and Árni
notes in <ref type="ms" target="#AM04-0435-a-en">AM 345 a 4to</ref>, fol. 42v, that a large
part is missing: <q xml:lang="is">Olafs Saga Helga. 4to. <lb/> vantar
mikid ï. hana hefi eg <lb/> feinged af Amtmanni Muller</q>. He also
acquired some leaves from the prefect at the Alþing in <date
when="1704">1704</date> (fol. 46r): <q xml:lang="is">Nockur bld
þ<ex>ar</ex>ur feck eg af <lb/> Amtm<ex>anni</ex> 1704. ä
Alþ<ex>in</ex>ge</q>.</item>
<item>Two years later, in <date when="1706">1706</date>, he acquired fols
35-36 from the son of <name type="person" key="BjoPet002">Björn
Pétursson</name> of <name type="place" key="BurVop01"
