What error? To help us debug this issue can you explain:

Will leave this open but please file this in homebrew-core in future, thanks, unless you can reproduce with multiple formulae. |
@MikeMcQuaid thank you for your reply. The symlink directory: The error message: "Error: File exists - /usr/local/opt/ffmpeg/.brew" I'm trying to use Homebrew to install ffmpeg using all the available "--with-" options per The installation gets almost to the end and in the "==> make alltools" phase instead of reporting the number of files installed, I get the error message. This is the command and response:
Same result with the --force flag. Prior to running the install command, I use

@mixelpixel Can you reproduce this every time you run this? If so, can you provide the exact commands you run for each step and the output of each command? This shouldn't be able to happen (but it obviously is so trying to pin down this bug). Thanks! |
@MikeMcQuaid Thank you for your help! Yes, this same error is reported every time I install invoking all 39 of the --with options (per Note, before the install I start with brew commands, twice each until they run without making any changes. Here is my latest install commands and output:
With this installation,

@MikeMcQuaid Also, I don't know that they are in any way related to the error message, but these two install report anomalies (?) were reported the very first time I installed FFmpeg. Since the first install there are not as many "Pouring" reports (I assume because components have already been installed in |
And another question: if you don't use those options this doesn't happen? Thanks again. |

Just saying. |
Hehe, yes. |
@MikeMcQuaid Does this mean that the error msg can be ignored? For what it is worth, installing with all options except chromaprint raises no errors: $ brew uninstall ffmpeg |
@mixelpixel There's a bug that needs fixed here but for now just avoid |

Please follow the general troubleshooting steps first:
brew update
and retried your prior step?brew doctor
, fixed as many issues as possible and retried your prior step?Bug reports:
late 2012 AirBook (i7, 8GB RAM, 2GHz) with a fresh Lion install, then upgraded to macOS Sierra 10.12.2 and recently upgraded to macOS Sierra 10.12.3
Terminal.app Version 2.7.1 (388)
I successfully installed ffmpeg using
brew install ffmpeg
. I then uninstalled withbrew uninstall ffmpeg
and tried to install with all the --with options, using:Uninstalling with brew removed the symlink directory and target directory and contents. Not sure why or which flag option might be causing this error. Of note, the only file in the error directory is the Ruby file "ffmpeg.rb" which contains these commands pertinent to the --with-tools option (I think):
Of note, ffmpeg 3.2.2 was installed (along with ffprobe & ffserver) but the ffplay command was not.
and the INSTALL_RECEIPT.json reports no "used_options":
After uninstalling again I used
$ brew install ffmpeg --force --with...
all the above options & I still got the same error, but, using:$ brew unlink ffmpeg && brew link ffmpeg
brew unlinked 84 symlinks and then linked 114 (an additional 30 not linked with the install). With that I now at least have ffplay and the INSTALL_RECEIPT.json file has stuff in the "used" section:
Why am I getting this error tho - and how can I resolve it?
Thank you
