Information from the original topic below. Thanks to @tmatthaeus for reporting this issue.
After a reload of icinga2 there is no icinga2 process via /etc/init.d/icinga2 reload there is no icinga2 process anymore.

OS: Debian 9.3
Icinga Version:

Problem here is that the systemd file is out of date. But we also have an issue with the PID file. (discussed in Icinga/icinga2#6082)

The sysV init should be fine, it is Debian specific...

NOT a blocker for 2.8.2, only 2.9

As 2.9.0 was released without the service file being updated, we are facing a problem.
Icinga/icinga2#6484

This should be fixed in current snapshots and then included in 2.10
