While migrating https://www.isoc.de to isoc2017-wp noticted two menu problems:

  • when I add a page to the menu the children of the page do not automatically appear in a sub menue
  • after adding some pages manually the main menu entry has a "can drop down" icon but there is no obvious way to see the dropdown (enforcing display of the submenue by temporarily changing the style doesn't show a reasonable result either).

So before starting deeper investigations: beside showing the respective icon: are drop down menus supported at all - and if so how? (the present ISOC.DE shows the dropdown on an "hover event" which -admitted- is not "responsive".)

Update: attached file shows the menu after adding manually child pages to the "ISOC.DE e.V." page. (notice the small drop down icon behind the menu text "ISOC.DE e.V.".)

I will ask the devs and let you know. Sorry about the late reply btw. Alex

In short: they can make a submenu at the upper left hand side of a page which will work better on mobile devices.
In addition, they can do a dropdown as well for larger screens, but they think that that is not necessary.

Let me know what you think.

The usual way to do it is to provide some bottom that spans a menu dropdown top/left of the page for small devices. This would replace the menue bar on the top. I wouldn't be enthusiastic about having it as part of the side bar since this is not where it has to be.

Large devices should have the top level menu as a bar on top with the respective subtrees as dropdown (which actually does not work).

Not answered was the question about automatic menu generation from the page tree. Will this be available as part of the theme (as some WP themes provide it) or will it be left to the "user" to implement this?

Question from ISOC Portugal: How can we replace the indication "Lees meer" by something like
"Read more" in the news section?

Simple Question:
Why not treat (Sub)Menus the way https://www.internetsociety.org/ does it.
It is close to perfect.

Btw.: I consider the ISOC Portugal question off-topic in this context. Should get an issue on its own.

Is There Life Out There?

I like the idea of the menu being like [https://www.internetsociety.org/]
