I have come back to DCC with my elder children and updated fitted decoder. I disabled programming support after reading it should be disabled on the nano.. and didn't realise what that meant! I then blindly copied the config file to AurduinoIDE and kept uploading various versions of dcc-ex code with that config
I only realised it must be something n00b because I then couldn't even do a manual <w 4 8> to reset laisdcc or even a simple <r 1> to get the two digit cab number.
Wonder if ex-dcc could return a message like.. programming disabled in the console.
Exeption during CV write: jmri.ProgrammerException: programmer in use - when it was in-fact NOT IN USE it just doesn't know programming is disabled. So I couldn't even add cabs to my roster if i remembered the ID :(

What versions (exactly) of DCC-EX and JMRI are you using?
When connected to this limited command station, does the "Service Mode Programmer" message show green and online? (See screenshot)
Please capture and post the message traffic showing the request and the reply from DCC-EX when you try to program to this limited command station. Use DCC++ Traffic Monitor and enable "Show translation", "Show raw data" and "Show timestamps"
