It is about time. The package has matured, we have had a few releases with bug fixes and are packed with many features that each would justify a switch to openxlsx2 (like rvg and mschart integration, pivot tables, themes, consistent styles, named styles, consistent return objects).
1.0 is not the end of the line, just a visible hint to the users that the package is considered to be stable and a promise, that the API no longer is unstable and will not change a lot in the foreseeable future.
