I think it would be good to be able to have possibility to rate articles like this too. Stars are not that popular now and in some scenarios this kind of rating is more suitable.

do you suggest to be implemented as field ?

I think addition as type feature would be better and put somewhere near Rating options on Type page. but if you think that field will work better then let it be field.

Cause admin will just enable it and then select which emoticons should be shown and that's all. not much features needed. just choosing emoticons to show.
