Top-10: display number instead of +99 #122
Comments
A primary goal of mine with this project is to continue to de-emphasize the individual and to drive everyone towards feeling involved and participating in the same thing. The move from "leaderboard" to "Top 10" exemplifies this. The 99+ serves two separate issues: #1 is the space to show more than 3 characters (what if someone has 1,000+ tags? 10,000?), #2 is that someone with only a few tags doesn't need to see that Kiri has 135 or 200 or eventually 500 tags. While you say that not seeing the exact number discourages to play more, I think that's obviously false. If someone has that many tags, they've already demonstrated how invested in playing they are. What we want, even more than that, is to encourage those who have less than 100 tags to feel like they are playing the same game. Note: on the player profile page, where you view all the tags by a single player, you can see the full number: https://vancouver.biketag.io/#/player/anibyl |
I will leave this issue open to keep the conversation going and state that I am open to changing my viewpoint. (aaaaaannnnnddd I clicked the wrong button. LoL) |
As someone who has about 30, seeing 130 doesn't discourage me, but that's just me. Every game has some kind of statistics, and I like when it's clear and unbiased. Sadly, I don't see the full number on the profile page. Where is it supposed to be? |
Thanks for your feedback, @anibyl! We certainly want to support those games that have over 1,000 tags (of which there are several in the world) and we also want to support individuals with 500+ tags and be able to represent that in a way that is both rewarding for those that reach that level and not demoralizing for those who are just starting out. You might also be surprised to know that there are games in Minneapolis / St Paul (an area we are looking to launch a BikeTag.org version for in the coming months) that claim to have upwards of 10,000 rounds. This is the game that never ends... I will state that from the perspective of the BikeTag Project, the primary goal of playing the game of BikeTag is to get on your bike and have fun time exploring your area. It's not about winning and I am really looking forward to the BikeDex (Player Archive of all submitted found locations + "wins") feature which we plan to roll out later this year. As for your second point, I hope we can all collaborate on this project to come up with a good way to showcase the "leaderboard/top10/winners/losers/lukers/whatever" representations of BikeTag Players that the community identifies with. |
I was looking back over the bugs here and realized that we are not capturing all tags under users with identical spellings and different cases. So |
I assumed it was a feature. Thank you for looking into it! |
Currently if a player has more than a hundred played tags, their badge displays +99. It kinda discourages to play more.
I would make room for 3 digits at least.
