I kind of regret bumping into this app after project was cancelled (according to Kickstarter, and as I'm not a backer I cannot see a message behind cancellation)

Would you care to give us some post mortem here?

I think this is important going forward, as social media need changes coming from other place than maximizing corporate profits.
I've been spinning an idea in my head for a while about building PoC similar to your project, so...

Hey @stanleyguevara - The Kickstarter was canceled, but good news! The project is still alive. The short version of the story is that we got "acquihired" and went back into stealth-ish mode for a few months to get some things cleaned up.

We now have an all-new authentication backend and a beta on Android under very active development.

The iOS app briefly went back into beta in early 2022 before going back into pure dev mode. What started as a small, intermittent problem with decryption errors gradually grew into a pervasive problem where things were failing all the time. We're currently working on replacing the Matrix iOS SDK with a homegrown alternative in pure Swift, which should be both easier to work with and more reliable. With any luck, the iOS app will be back on TestFlight in Q1 2023.

I updated the README in this repo to point to the new home for the project.
