Since github uses @ to mention/address people I think it would be better to use it for the same purpose.

I suggest tags are created using $ which is a convention I have been using on github issues as well.

This will future-proof laverna for social plugins that want to use @ to refer to people.

What about using hashtags # instead of $ sign? I think it is more widespread than $.

Use $ for tags: $key value

Use # for keywords: #keyword (twitter et al)

Wouldn't using $ for tags interfere with the $$ for math? Eg. $x=y^2$.

In the new version # is used for tags. In one of the next version it will possible to configure which symbol you'd prefer.
