That would be really useful, although I haven't found a lot of information about how NTFS does it.

Do you have any reference? Maybe we shall look at the source of Testdisk.

Wikipedia seem to have a good reference about the NTFS compression algorithm.

Looks like one of the newer NTFS compression implementations was reverse-engineered not too long ago here: https://github.com/ebiggers/ntfs-3g-system-compression/
And is used in this ntfs2btrfs utility: https://github.com/maharmstone/ntfs2btrfs
