Because the contoso domain is already in use (by Microsoft), users will have to configure a different domain for their AAD. For example, I was able to create contosoef as my subdomain; however, this means the associated domain is contosoef.onmicrosoft.com, so any users created in the AD will have to have user names @contosoef.microsoft.com. This is not documented in this Quickstart at all - you need to add a step to check the "Custom domain names" tab first to get the verified domain name in which to create users.
