Describe the feature
This feature has already 'claimed' to be planned in an announcement 2 months ago saying it would come out in the next 30 days. I'm just putting it here, just to bring it back up. I think this is something we all want.
image

How the feature is useful
There are so many servers hogging really good names, but not using them to the point where servers trying to get recognized have to have these weird names. OG names build reputations for servers, so it would be nice to have the ones that aren't being used.

It would be cool if it was a 6-month timeout, and a box would appear on your panel if it was planning on being name changed. Also, just change the servers name to "noname" or use a randomly generated one.

Definitely something we want to do. Not sure on the timeline though. Feel free to give some input on how you think we should implement it :)

Server owners must "claim" their server as active every 30 days to keep their server name from being added to a list of available to be requested. Afterwards, staff can look at how long ago the server was reclaimed to determine if the server name is inactive. This will also help with having multiple accounts to get free servers, because you would have to claim all of the servers.

Imo some things should be done differently, 1 being that its 60 days and instead of relying on the owner the server must be offline and not started up for x amount of days, since the owner may be on vacation and not be able to claim for example but people can join the server and that resets the countdown

I was thing 3 months, and there should be a really big red box on the server that's being effected, as well as an email

As i have mentioned before, this isn't necessarily the best idea since not everyone has time to go onto the panel and confirm they want the server name, it should be relied off of when the server was last started since that means the server name won't be reset if the owner is on vacation etc and players are playing on the server. If it relied on the server being started in game or via the panel it would make it much more convenient for the server admins

Lmao if someone doesn't have time to claim their server names, i dont think the server is important enough to them. Also 30 days is a fine amount.

30 days is not enough.

I personally feel mixed on this suggestion. Many people took the time just to reserve the server name, for future projects and other purposes. Taking that away from them would be despicable. I am aware that I thought differently in the past, but now I believe that you should be guaranteed security over a server name if you have claimed it, it shouldn't be up for grabs after a few weeks of inactivity.

I think that the suggestion is a great idea, as long as it's implemented correctly. It does feel like wally over there wants to steal a server name from someone tho. I think that 3 months is fine, and any activity (starting it up, clicking an email notif, or anything regarding the server) should reset the timer.

Personally i feel this is the best approach for minehut to not upset server owners

have you ever misspelled a server name on /join or accidentally typed /join lobby instead of /join lobby 1? Let's say I wanted the name "Lobby", and someone misspells it in the lobbies. That screws everything up and resets the time.

I was thing 3 months

3 months is absurd. If anyone really cares about their names, popping into your panel for 3 mins to click a button isn't difficult.

They can't lose their server name if they claim it. Also, there's a difference between saving and hogging. I hear about people all the time in the discord that talk about their list of og server names, without actually doing anything with the names. If a person is actually currently working on a project, it is no difficulty to claim it.

It does feel like wally over there wants to steal a server name from someone tho.

  1. I don't want to steal a name
  2. even if I did, it is fair game. The server owners didn't think it was valuable enough to keep, so oh well.

Personally i feel this is the best approach for minehut to not upset server owners

that is the entire point. anybody can start up a server. it should be implemented into the server panel because it is the responsibility of the server owner to keep it claimed.

Maybe each plan can make a longer Claimed Duration, with MHUnlimited keeping the name permanently, without having to Renew?

lets not add money to server names... i don't want to see some kid lose their smp bc they didn't pay money

It's just a thought. And I don't mean to renew your Name, you renew your plan, I just mean the plan makes the timer longer

or they could just extend the character limit?

@awaffle1:

or they could just extend the character limit?

That wouldn't do anything about older names, just create more clutter. That is not a long-term solution

Can we get some actual progress done here? I don't want to name my next server MineWorld72947238 because Minehut devs move slower than the US government at times. The ideas we have now are good, I believe the claim button shouldn't always be there but appear when your server hasn't had players on in a given period of time (60 days). If you press the claim button or a player gets on, the timer is reset.

If starting it up restarted the timer servers would rarely get taken, people often do /join to see if a server is taken
