Hello. I have MiniKeePass v1.5.2 (been using the app for a couple years--really like it!), installed on iPhone 6, and backing up through iTunes. I would now like to access a copy of the .kdbx database file on my Windows 8.1 Surface Pro 3.

I just installed KeePassX. It sees the database, but KeePassX then asks for a password and/or key file. I don't know what to enter.

Question: any recommendation on how I use the MiniKeePass database with KeePassX, or alternatively another app or program I might use on the Surface?

Thanks.

When you created your kdbx file in MiniKeePass you were asked for a password that's used to encrypt your password database. That password is required to open the database, and that password is what KeePassX is asking for. MiniKeePass can be configured to remember that password in the iOS keychain, which might be why you don't recall using a password. If you don't recall the password, I'd suggest trying any passwords you commonly use.

Thanks, @jarush, for the suggestions. May be an iOS keychain thing, but I don't remember and don't seem to have any keychain passwords stored on the phone (although I could be wrong). I created the database in MiniKeePass in the iPhone a couple years ago. I've setup MiniKeePass to require a PIN when I open the app, but it doesn't prompt for any other passwords in order to open the database.

I tried a couple guesses at my password, but KeePassX (below) rejected me. Any other suggestions?

You had to provide a password to MiniKeePass when you setup the kdbx file; that password is used to generate the key that's used to encrypt your password file. There's no penalty for guessing the wrong password though, so I suggest you keep guessing.

I suspect you have the "Remember Passwords" option enabled in MiniKeePass. If this option is enabled, your master password is stored in the iOS keychain and MiniKeePass won't prompt you for it every time your kdbx files is opened. If you investigate if this option is enabled in MiniKeePass, be warned that if you disable this option the keychain will be deleted and MiniKeePass will start prompting you for the password just like KeePassX.

There are tools out there that can dump the keychain, which you could possibly use to recover your master password. I have never used these tools, and I suspect they are not very user friendly nor easy to get working, so I can't really suggest how to go about dumping the keychain.
