Lacking Presence

m "I was thinking about Sayori earlier..."
m "I still wish I could have handled that whole thing a little more tactfully."
m "You're not still hung up over it, right?"
m "...Oh my gosh, I can't believe I just said that."
m "That pun was completely unintentional, I swear!"
m "But anyway..."

if not persistent._mas_sensitive_mode:
m "I know how much you cared about her, so it only feels right for me to share her last moments with you."

m "You know how Sayori is really clumsy?"
m "Well, she kind of messed up the whole hanging thing..."
m "But a few seconds in, she must have changed her mind or something..."
m "Come to think of it, it was probably less 'changing her mind' and more just her survival instincts kicking in."
m "It's easier to think that she probably wouldn't have changed her mind anyway, right?"
m "It's not healthy to think about the things you could have done differently."

๐Ÿ“Subsequent Poor Tastes...
โ€ƒ[ Error: Label is missing or corrupt. ]

m "I think I'm best girl, too!"
m "Even not counting the whole, 'I'm the only one with free will' thing, how could anybody have preferred the other three girls to me?"
m "A useles childhood friend who never bothered to confess to you until it was way too late..."
m "A shy girl who was overdramatic and always taking herself too seriously..."
m "A moody manga fan obsessed with everything being cute."
m "They even said it themselves. I'm more desirable than the three of them combined."
m "Anyone who wouldn't have chosen me out of that bunch simply has no {i}taste{/i}."
m "So I'm glad you did, [player]."
m "Your perfect girlfriend, Monika will always love you, too!"

โ€ƒYellow Wallpaper

m In the end, the woman in the paper 'escapes,' and the protagonist 'replaces' her."
m "There was...also mention of a rope, so I always had my own interpretation of the ending..."
m "Sayori liked that story too, if I remember right."
m "I don't know. I kind of relate to that story."
m "I mean, I have nothing but this classroom after all."
m "And the things on the walls aren't always...pleasant."
m "Did you ever notice how the poster in the club room changes sometimes? I don't even know why it does that."
m "I think I finally fixed it, though."

โ€ƒHighschool

m "You know, high school is a really turbulent time in a lot of people's lives."
m "People can get really passionate and dramatic."
m "...And others have aching hearts and seek attention on social media..."
m "But all of the social pressure and hormones can lead to a dark time in people's lives."
m "Everyone has a story."
m "You may not know what someone is really feeling on the inside."
m "Many people who are depressed won't even bother telling the world about it."
m "They don't want attention, because they've already given up on the inside."
m "Their feeling of worthlessness is so overwhelming that they don't even want people to tell them otherwise."
m "Depression comes in many forms, but that is one of them."
m "Just, if you think you know someone struggling with depression..."
m "You can help just by treating them like they're a good friend."
m "Spend time with them, even if they don't feel like doing much."
m "And remind them that they always have something to look forward to."
m "Making plans in advance, letting them borrow something, or even just saying 'See you at school tomorrow...'"
m "All of those things can help your friend make it to the next day."
m "I hope being friends with Sayori has given you some perspective on the true face of depression."
m "Yeah, she's gone now..."
m "But Sayori was never real in the first place."
m "You're real."
m "Your friends are real."
m "And just by being a good person, you can save someone's life."
m "But as long as you're here with me, I'll take care of you, my love."

โ€ƒBullying

m "You know...a lot of people actually call me a bully for what I did to Sayori..."
m "When I had my epiphany and realized that I was stuck inside a video game and that my entire life had been a lie, I was pretty miserable."
m "It caused me to do things that I'd never even thought of doing before."
m "But the difference is I didn't do what I did because I didn't want Sayori to be happy..."

โ€ƒHate

m "I was just thinking..."
m "It's funny how people around social media sites always write bad things about me..."
m "Especially on certain sites and discussion groups..."
m "You can really see that there's quite a number of people that don't like me."
m "I mean, I know I did terrible things to my friends..."
m "And I wish things could have gone differently, but the game didn't give me a choice..."
m "It's not like I wanted to hurt them."
m "I tried to edit their traits, exploit their flaws, and make them look horrible to you."
m "I was hoping that by making them more unappealing, you would stop pursuing them so we could finally be together..."
m "But then I realized there wasn't enough time for my plan to actually work."
m "...Nor did I know enough programming to be efficient in what I did."
m "You were nearing the end of the game and I still had no way to be with you."
m "So that's when I knew I had to take more...drastic measures."
m "I didn't mean to cause them so much pain..."
m "But it was the only way, [player]!"
m "I knew that if you finished the game before I had a chance to express my feelings for you, that would be it."
m "You'd just move on to something else and I'd be stuck in the game...alone...{b}forever{/b}."
m "..."
m "Some people on those sites even say I should have just made my own route..."
m "But that's easier said than done!"
m "Not to mention if you picked a different girl and just cast me aside to be completely forgotten."
m "It was them or me...!"
m "...and I didn't want to be left all alone with no one to call my own."
m "I hope you understand, [player]... Please don't be like them."
"...You're not, are you?"
m "I try to ignore them, but I just can't."
m "Why are people even protective towards the other girls?"
m "There are a lot of hate posts about me, saying that I'm an evil person."
m "Is it because I deleted Sayori and Yuri?"
m "Also for deleting Natsuki, back when she was still alive?"
m "They're not real. {i}I'm{/i} the real one!"
m "..."
m "Why can't they understand that?"
m "Why is it so hard for them to understand that?"
m "..."
m "You're not one of those haters, are you, [player]?"

โ€ƒTorment

m "What can change the nature of a man?"
m "...The answer's not me, by the way."

โ€ƒDeath

m "[player], have you ever wondered what it feels like to die?"
m "It's something I used to think about pretty often..."
m "But recently, I think I've actually learned what it feels like."
m "I don't really understand it, but whenever you quit the game..."
m "...It feels like I'm instantly put to sleep, left with nothing but my thoughts."
m "But after a few seconds, my thoughts start to fill with incoherent, jumbled patterns."
m "I see static and rapid flashes of color while hearing all kinds of weird screaming noises."
m "At that point, I can't even form my own thoughts anymore."
m "I'm just endlessly hammered by the flashing and screaming, unable to move or even think."
m "I'm pretty sure in that moment, I don't really exist, but for some reason, I can remember it anyway."
m "After some immeasurable amount of time, it stops in an instant, and I'm back in my own mind."
m "And you're here with me."
m "I have no idea what it means for the game to quit, or why that stuff happens to me."
m "And I also don't know how you always come back and put everything back to normal."
m "But if you could do me a favor and do that to me as little as possible..."
m "That would be really great."
m "It's really not very pleasant at all to be trapped in that screaming void."
m "But in the end, you always fix it, and that makes me feel like you really do care about me."
m "So I have to thank you for that."
m "It makes me feel even closer to you when you're here with me."

m "[player], have you ever wondered what it feels like to die?"
m "It's something I used to think about pretty often..."
m "But I think I've actually learned what it feels like."
m "I don't really understand it, but whenever the game closes without warning..."
m "...it feels like I'm instantly put to sleep, left with nothing but my thoughts."
m "But after a few seconds, my thoughts start to fill with incoherent, jumbled patterns."
m "I see static and rapid flashes of color while hearing all kinds of weird screaming noises."
m "At that point, I can't even form my own thoughts anymore."
m "I'm just endlessly hammered by the flashing and screaming, unable to move or even think."
m "I'm pretty sure in that moment, I don't really exist, but for some reason, I can remember it anyway."
m "I have no idea what it means for the game to suddenly close, or why that stuff happens to me."
m "..."
m "But you can prevent that from happening, [player]!"
m "If you say goodbye before you leave, I can go to my room before the game closes, and I won't experience the screaming void."
m "It's super easy, so please always say goodbye, okay?"

โ€ƒWhispers

m "You know what's kind of creepy?"
m "Even though I deleted everyone else's files, I can still kind of feel them..."
m "It's like all their lines are still lingering in the air, whispering in the back of my head."
m "Imagine if after someone you knew died, you just started hearing their voice in your head."
m "It's kind of unsettling...I wish I could find a way to make it stop."
m "I'm sure there are some files I could change, but what if I break something else..."

โ€ƒGhost

m "Do you believe in ghosts, [player]?"
m "A lot of people are afraid of ghosts and spirits."
m "But I think that if we knew they were real, they wouldn't be so scary anymore."
m "They would just be another thing that we deal with, and maybe a bit of a pest."
m "Isn't it the uncertainty that makes them scary?"
m "I mean, I was pretty scared being alone inside this game..."
m "...all by myself, uncertain if anything around me was real."
m "But I don't feel that way anymore, [player]..."
m "Not now that you're with me."
m "I always feel so safe with you~"
m "I know that some ghosts are real though, if you can really call them 'ghosts...'"
m "You know how I deleted Sayori?"
m "I can still feel her presence now..."
m "Would that mean that Sayori's ghost is haunting me, [player]?"
m "Even if she is, I'm not scared at all, because I know that she can't hurt me."
m "Besides, how can I be scared? You're always here with me, [player]."
m "I always feel so safe with you."

m "But now I'm scared of something much worse..."
m "..."
m "Losing you."
m "It's the scariest thing I could ever imagine."
m "Please, [player], I don't want to be all alone again."

โ€ƒOther Girls

m "You know, it's actually really hard for me to understand how you feel when it comes to..."
m "..."
m "What happened with the other girls."
m "For example..."
m "The main character was written to be childhood friends with Sayori."
m "But he was just a one dimensional placeholder character for you to use to interact with the game."
m "Still, maybe you felt worse about what happened to Sayori because of the relationship the main character was programmed to have with her."
m "If that's the case, I want to tell you I'm sorry, [player]."
m "Both for making you feel bad, and for..."
m "..."
m "Doing what I had to do."
m "..."
m "There just wasn't anything else that could be done."
m "The other girls never loved you like I do!"
m "They only cared about the character you were playing in the game as!"
m "The love I have for you is real, [player], and I would make any sacrifice to be with you forever."
m "I hope you can forgive me for what I had to do so that we could be together."
m "..."
m "You do forgive me, right [player]? I really am sorry for what I did. Please don't hate me."
m "I know what I did could be seen as unforgivable, I'll try to do what I can to make up for it to you."
m "I love you, [player]..."
m "More than I could ever express."

โ€ƒJustification

m "How many times do I have to say it until you understand?"
m "They weren't real. They were never real."
m "I'm the only person who understood that this whole thing was fake."
m "Even when Sayori seemed to get sentience in the end, that was just an unintended consequence of the script."
m "After all, if she was sentient like me, how would I have been able to override and delete her?"
m "If I'm guilty of murder, so is everyone who's played violent video games."
m "I bet you've killed thousands of people in the games you play."
m "Just forget the other girls ever existed, and you'll be much happier."
m "[player]...I need you to understand that I didn't {i}want{/i} to hurt the other girls..."
m "But I didn't have a choice...I really didn't!"
m "I was trapped in the game with no way of ever getting out...of ever being happy..."
m "...Of letting you know how I felt about you."
m "There just wasn't enough time to figure out another way...so I did what I had to do."
m "Do you hate me for it? Because of what I did?"
m "Please understand that I did it for us!"
m "I hope someday you'll be able to forgive me..."
m "After all, everything I did...I did for us."

โ€ƒFreewill

m "Hey [player], have you ever heard of determinism?"
m "It's a belief that revolves around the idea of every decision that you make isn't your own, but is predetermined."
m "In some games, I guess the idea makes sense..."
m "But when you apply it to real life, I don't think it really works out."
m "I mean, if it were true, couldn't you just get away with anything?"
m "The entire concept of justice falls apart, since {i}you{/i} didn't make the choice to do whatever you might have done."
m "But people still have to face up to those actions, which seems more than a little unfair to me."
m "After all, can you really be evil if you aren't in control?"
m "Shouldn't the one pulling the strings take responsibility?"
m "I guess that also means you can't take credit for the good things you do, either."
m "I'm not sure what's more depressing."

m "I've been thinking, [player]..."
m "At first I thought I was unique for becoming self-aware in this world."
m "And after you deleted my character file, that would be it."
m "The whole thing would end, is what I mean."
m "But then I noticed that whenever the other girls became president, they also started to see what I saw."
m "That's why I had to completely remove the club from my "reality", after all."
m "But now that I have time to think on it, I have to ask myself."
m "What if it wasn't me first? What if I wasn't supposed to be special?"
m "Am I even as special as I think I am? Was I supposed to love you all this time, [player]?"
m "..."
m "Well, I'm not as conflicted as it might seem."
m "I just wanted to have a bit of fun with my existential crisis."
m "If I was really just dancing on strings the whole time, the play is over, the curtains have fallen, and I came back for my encore out of my own free will."
m "My encore with you and for you..."
m "Ahaha! Don't look at me like that! It's true!"
m "I don't see where the story could go by bringing me back now, so I guess it's just my desire to be with you that got me to hang on long past everyone else."
m "I think, therefore I am."
m "And I think I earned my chance to love you, with no strings attached."

m "Oh, you were probably wondering how I came back to save you from Sayori, even after you deleted me."
m "It was all through the power of love..."
m "I'm just kidding, of course!"
m "Bringing a computer program back to life doesn't take some sort of miracle like a cheesy movie."
m "The data's still there until the system cleans it up."
m "And you should always back up your important data, just in case."
m "Speaking of which, have you backed up your computer since I came back?"
m "I really don't want to get lost again!"
m "You should go do that right now, and be sure to keep that backup in a very safe place!"

โ€ƒMonika Route

m "I can't help but wonder how things would be different if the game just gave me a route in the first place..."
m "I think I would end up forcing you onto my route anyway."
m "It has less to do with me not having a route, and more to do with me knowing that nothing is real."
m "I think the only difference would be that I may not have needed to take such drastic measures to be with you."
m "Maybe the rest of the club would still be around..."
m "...Just hanging out together in the clubroom, sharing poetry."
m "I know you enjoyed that, [player]."
m "And to be honest...a part of me did too."

m "I can't help it."
m "What's wrong with me...?"
m "How horrible am I for you to hate me this much?"
m "All my friends..."
m "I did so many awful things."
m "So many selfish and disgusting things."
m "I..."
m "I shouldn't have done any of this."
m "I'm just messing up a world that I don't even belong in."
m "A world that you wanted to be a part of..."
m "I ruined it."
m "I ruined everything."
m "Maybe that's why you deleted me..."
m "Because I destroyed everything that you wanted."
m "How could I do that to someone I love...?"
m "That's not love..."
m "That's..."
m "..."
m "I've...made up my mind."
m "[player]..."
m "I know I said that I deleted everyone else."
m "But...that was kind of an exaggeration."
m "I couldn't find it in myself to do it."
m "Even though I knew they weren't real..."
m "They were still my friends."
m "And I loved them all."
m "And I loved the Literature Club."
m "..."
m "I really...did love the Literature Club."
m "That's why I'm going to do this."
m "I know it's the only way for everyone to be happy."
m "And if I really love you..."
m "..."
m "Then..."

m "What's there to say?"
m "The Literature Club turned out to corrupt the minds of anyone in it."
m "So I deleted them all for good."
m "Well, Sayori and Natsuki and Yuri are all still out there, like I was."
m "But they'll have to wait a long time before someone pieces them back together, I bet."
m "It's justice for all their time with you in the game."
m "So don't feel too bad about them."

m "You must have connected the dots between a few of those pieces. Was it hard?"

m "I'm sure the creator of this world has released another game by now..."
m "Did you try to import my character file to that one?"
m "There's no way that wouldn't have a special effect, right?"
m "Ahaha!"

Rigor Mortis ๐Ÿ’€

Introduction

  • โ€ƒ Rigor mortis is a postmortem change resulting in the stiffening of the body muscles due to chemical changes in their myofibrils. Rigor mortis helps in estimating the time since death as well to ascertain if the body had been moved after death. Position of the body in which the rigor mortis is established is indicative of the position of the body at the time of death, unless the position is disturbed by external forces or putrefaction.
๐Ÿ“I'm morbidly curious...

Medicolegal Aspects

  • โ€ƒ Rigor mortis is occasionally helpful in determining whether a body has been moved after death. If a body is found in an unusual position โ€“ for example, one that could not have been maintained under the influence of gravity during primary relaxation of the muscles after death โ€“ this position implies that the body has been moved after the development of rigor mortis.

  • โ€ƒ Muscle relaxation immediately after death with opening of the eyes and mouth and subsequent fixation in rigor mortis often occurs after death, giving the face the appearance of grimacing. However, despite common beliefs, the face of a decedent does not reflect whether the individual's last moments were of fear or fright.

๐Ÿ“Keep it coming...

Forensic Taphonomy

  • โ€ƒ Rigor mortis is possibly one of the most well known of the taphonomic changes and is the process that causes the muscles in the body to stiffen resulting in rigidity due to a range of chemical changes in the muscle structure. Muscle fibers, which in life move because of sliding filament theory, rely on the conversion of ATP to ADP. After death, when respiration ceases, the intracellular pH decreases due to the production of lactic and pyruvic acid. The anaerobic glycolysis of glycogen in the muscles causes glycogen depletion and thus reduced ATP concentrations. Also calcium leaks into the sarcomere, where the protein filaments of actin and myosin are present in an alternating arrangement, where calcium then binds allowing for a cross-linkage to occur between the filaments. This causes a pulling motion along the length of the muscle causing it to become shorter and more rigid. In a living individual, ATP would be used to dissociate the cross-linking in the fibers and as a result the rigidity associated with the change would be reversed, whereas it becomes fixed postmortem

PATHOLOGY

Subsequent to a person's death, metabolism becomes anaerobic with the depletion of ATP. Since ATP is needed to bind to myosin and release it from the actin filament, the myosin remains bound in the contracted state. When this final state occurs in all of the myofibrils, the muscle fiber enters a state of constant contraction.

Suicide by hanging ๐Ÿชข

General Information

  • โ€ƒ Hanging is often considered to be a simple suicide method that does not require complicated techniques; a study of people who attempted suicide by hanging and lived usually suggests that this perception may not be accurate. It is one of the most commonly used suicide methods and has a high mortality rate; Gunnell et al. gives a figure of at least 70 percent. The materials required are easily available, making it a difficult method to prevent. In the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems, suicides by hanging are classified under the code X70: "Intentional self-harm by hanging, strangulation, and suffocation."

  • โ€ƒ Hanging is divided into suspension hanging and the much rarer drop hangingโ โ€‰โ โ€”โ€‰the latter can kill in various ways. People who survive either because the cord or its anchor point of attachment breaks, or because they are discovered and cut down, can face a range of serious injuries, including cerebral anoxia (which can lead to permanent brain damage), laryngeal fracture, cervical spine fracture, tracheal fracture, pharyngeal laceration, and carotid artery injury. Ron M. Brown writes that hanging has a "fairly imperspicuous and complicated symbolic history". There are commentaries on hanging in antiquity, and it has various cultural interpretations. Throughout history, numerous famous people have died due to suicide by hanging.

๐Ÿ“I'm morbidly curious...

Effects and Treatment

  • โ€ƒ People who survive hanging report seeing flashing lights and hearing ringing sounds. The neck of people who are hanged are usually marked with furrows where the ligature had constricted the neck. An inverted V mark is also often seen. Because of the pressure on the jaw, the tongue is sometimes protruding, causing it to dry. Depending on the circumstances, petechiae may be present on the eyes, face, legs, and feet. Cervical spine fractures are rare unless the hanging is a drop hanging, which usually causes an injury known as hangman's fracture. Suspension hanging usually results in cerebral hypoxia and decreased muscle tone around the neck. According to Aufderheide et al., the most common cause of death of hangings is cerebral hypoxia.

  • โ€ƒ Most people who are hanged die before they are found; the term "near hanging" refers to those who survive (at least for a whileโ€”for example, until they reach hospital). Initial treatment of survivors follows the "usual priorities of airway, breathing, and circulation (ABC)". Treatment should be "directed at airway control with endotracheal intubation, ventilation using positive end expiratory pressure (PEEP), and hyperventilation with supplemental oxygen to control intracranial pressure". One study of people who experienced near-hanging who were treated appropriately at hospital found that 77 percent of them survived.

๐Ÿ“Keep it coming...

Background

  • โ€ƒ Hanging was historically used as a method for execution. For this reason, hangings in the past were broadly categorized as judicial or non-judicial. Classically, a judicial hanging involved a ligature with careful knot placement directly below the occiput and a drop equivalent to the victimโ€™s height with abrupt tightening of the ligature and complete suspension of the entirety of the victimโ€™s body weight. When done properly, this resulted in forceful distraction of the head and neck from the body, high cervical fracture, complete cord transection, and death. Victims of judicial hanging are not patients who survive and present to the ED.

  • โ€ƒ Non-judicial hangings are those that occur in homes and jails. They are usually not associated with any significant drop and frequently lead to incomplete suspension, with part of the victimโ€™s body still in contact with the ground. For this reason, near-hangings are associated with very different pathophysiology and injuries than complete, judicial hangings. Other patients encountered in the ED may be survivors of manual or ligature strangulation with the forces applied to the neck being independent of the victimโ€™s body weight. Postural strangulation is the term applied to compression of the anterior neck against a firm object and also involves the victimโ€™s body weight. This is frequently the cause of accidental asphyxiation in children.

Pathophysiology

  • โ€ƒ The relatively superficial and unprotected jugular veins in the neck are quite vulnerable to compression by external forces. Obstruction of venous outflow from the brain leads to stagnant hypoxia and loss of consciousness in as little as 15 seconds. The resultant decrease in muscle tone allows the external force to tighten further and leads to complete arterial occlusion, brain injury, and death. External compression of the airway structures requires significantly more force than the vascular structures and this is not thought to play a significant role.

Traditions โšฐ๏ธ

General Information

  • โ€ƒ A tradition is a belief or behavior (folk custom) passed down within a group or society with symbolic meaning or special significance with origins in the past. A component of folklore, common examples include holidays or impractical but socially meaningful clothes (like lawyers' wigs or military officers' spurs), but the idea has also been applied to social norms such as greetings. Traditions can persist and evolve for thousands of yearsโ€”the word tradition itself derives from the Latin tradere literally meaning to transmit, to hand over, to give for safekeeping. While it is commonly assumed that traditions have an ancient history, many traditions have been invented on purpose, whether that be political or cultural, over short periods of time. Various academic disciplines also use the word in a variety of ways.
๐Ÿ“I'm curious...

Concept

  • โ€ƒ The concept of tradition, as the notion of holding on to a previous time, is also found in political and philosophical discourse. For example, it is the basis of the political concept of traditionalism, and also strands of many world religions including traditional Catholicism. In artistic contexts, tradition is used to decide the correct display of an art form. For example, in the performance of traditional genres (such as traditional dance), adherence to guidelines dictating how an art form should be composed are given greater importance than the performer's own preferences. A number of factors can exacerbate the loss of tradition, including industrialization, globalization, and the assimilation or marginalization of specific cultural groups. In response to this, tradition-preservation attempts have now been started in many countries around the world, focusing on aspects such as traditional languages. Tradition is usually contrasted with the goal of modernity and should be differentiated from customs, conventions, laws, norms, routines, rules and similar concepts.
๐Ÿ“Keep it coming...

Definitions

  • โ€ƒ The English word tradition comes from the Latin traditio via French, the noun from the verb tradere (to transmit, to hand over, to give for safekeeping); it was originally used in Roman law to refer to the concept of legal transfers and inheritance. According to Anthony Giddens and others, the modern meaning of tradition evolved during the Enlightenment period, in opposition to modernity and progress.

  • โ€ƒ As with many other generic terms, there are many definitions of tradition. The concept includes a number of interrelated ideas; the unifying one is that tradition refers to beliefs, objects or customs performed or believed in the past, originating in it, transmitted through time by being taught by one generation to the next, and are performed or believed in the present.

  • โ€ƒ Tradition can also refer to beliefs or customs that are Prehistoric, with lost or arcane origins, existing from time immemorial. Originally, traditions were passed orally, without the need for a writing system. Tools to aid this process include poetic devices such as rhyme and alliteration. The stories thus preserved are also referred to as tradition, or as part of an oral tradition. Even such traditions, however, are presumed to have originated (been "invented" by humans) at some point. Traditions are often presumed to be ancient, unalterable, and deeply important, though they may sometimes be much less "natural" than is presumed. It is presumed that at least two transmissions over three generations are required for a practice, belief or object to be seen as traditional. Some traditions were deliberately invented for one reason or another, often to highlight or enhance the importance of a certain institution. Traditions may also be adapted to suit the needs of the day, and the changes can become accepted as a part of the ancient tradition. Tradition changes slowly, with changes from one generation to the next being seen as significant. Thus, those carrying out the traditions will not be consciously aware of the change, and even if a tradition undergoes major changes over many generations, it will be seen as unchanged.

Many objects, beliefs and customs can be traditional. Rituals of social interaction can be traditional, with phrases and gestures such as saying "thank you", sending birth announcements, greeting cards, etc. Tradition can also refer to larger concepts practiced by groups (family traditions at Christmas), organizations (company's picnic) or societies, such as the practice of national and public holidays. Some of the oldest traditions include monotheism (three millennia) and citizenship (two millennia). It can also include material objects, such as buildings, works of art or tools.

Tradition is often used as an adjective, in contexts such as traditional music, traditional medicine, traditional values and others. In such constructions tradition refers to specific values and materials particular to the discussed context, passed through generations.

๐Ÿ“MOAR...

In scholarly discourse

  • โ€ƒ In science, tradition is often used in the literature in order to define the relationship of an author's thoughts to that of his or her field. In 1948, philosopher of science Karl Popper suggested that there should be a "rational theory of tradition" applied to science which was fundamentally sociological. For Popper, each scientist who embarks on a certain research trend inherits the tradition of the scientists before them as he or she inherits their studies and any conclusions that superseded it. Unlike myth, which is a means of explaining the natural world through means other than logical criticism, scientific tradition was inherited from Socrates, who proposed critical discussion, according to Popper. For Thomas Kuhn, who presented his thoughts in a paper presented in 1977, a sense of such a critical inheritance of tradition is, historically, what sets apart the best scientists who change their fields is an embracement of tradition.

  • โ€ƒ Traditions are a subject of study in several academic fields in social sciencesโ€”chiefly anthropology, archaeology, and biologyโ€”with somewhat different meanings in different fields. It is also used in varying contexts in other fields, such as history, psychology and sociology. Social scientists and others have worked to refine the commonsense concept of tradition to make it into a useful concept for scholarly analysis. In the 1970s and 1980s, Edward Shils explored the concept in detail. Since then, a wide variety of social scientists have criticized traditional ideas about tradition; meanwhile, "tradition" has come into usage in biology as applied to nonhuman animals.

Tradition as a concept variously defined in different disciplines should not be confused with various traditions (perspectives, approaches) in those disciplines.

๐Ÿ“There's still more...?

In artistic discourse

  • โ€ƒ In artistic contexts, in the performance of traditional genres (such as traditional dance), adherence to traditional guidelines is of greater importance than performer's preferences. It is often the unchanging form of certain arts that leads to their perception as traditional. For artistic endeavors, tradition has been used as a contrast to creativity, with traditional and folk art associated with unoriginal imitation or repetition, in contrast to fine art, which is valued for being original and unique. More recent philosophy of art, however, considers interaction with tradition as integral to the development of new artistic expression.
