What will happen in your session?

Many people concerned about algorithms, AI, and automated computer systems are thinking long and hard about privacy, discrimination, and ethical implications. But between talk of "surveillance capitalism," "fully automated luxury communism," and everything in between, public debate pays scant attention to the issue of data-driven technologies and marginality. In this session, we invite individuals to gain a deeper intersectional understanding of how data-driven systems impact marginalized communities' ability to access basic human needs. Based on experiences of individuals facing housing insecurity, job insecurity, criminalization, and more, participants will explore patterns and (dis)connections in order to develop new and creative practices for keeping all communities protected, together.

What is the goal or outcome of your session?

Our goal is to have participants:

  1. Hear stories from members of marginalized communities as they confront data-driven systems in their daily lives
  2. Connect these experiences to human rights and social justice considerations
  3. Deepen human impact of data-driven technologies
  4. Reflect and share their own experience and community stories, including how they relate or not to those of marginalized community members
  5. Talking themselves and identify for himself how data driven systems are affecting their ability to live their lives
  6. Reflect upon existing strategies and develop new ones to confront data-driven technologies

If your session requires additional materials or electronic equipment, please outline your needs.

None needed. But my team members will be traveling from the US and will need travel and accommodation support.

That's fantastic! Super looking forward. I can't tell by this thread... but something is happening with Chupadados? Either way, excited to meet you Joana. :)

Hi, I have two team members coming. Tawana... and Tamika--who's been supported by a grant to come. What are the next processes for moving forward? Is our session on the 29th? Are we definitely merged with Chupadados? Thanks for updating me.

Sorry for the delay @gangadharansp - no I think your sessions are free to run on their own. Note the draft schedule here in Github https://github.com/MozillaFoundation/mozfest-program-2017/projects/2?fullscreen=true where you're currently down for 2pm on Sunday in the Learning Forum. You should have received an email today with access details to the scheduling app, Guidebook, where you can update your session details and add you professional bio.

This week we're locking in ticketing. It's getting real close! I need all the names and email addresses for your additional facilitators EMAILED to me by THURSDAY October 12. We can only offer you THREE free facilitator tickets, including yourself. We can give out additional discounted tickets for those extras. When you send these details please designate whose names are to be free and who is the discounted rate.

Thanks in advance!
