Is it possible to expose a plugin interface that allows for dynamic song search from remote services?

My idea is, if such an interface exists, I would be able to access the music list from online streaming media through a plugin, and play it using the curl plugin. I've noticed that using the proxy plugin, one database refresh only searches for songs locally, which doesn't fulfill the intended function.
