So, this HN post is trending. I wonder what nasty domino effect it will have on anything that uses youtube-dl

I will try to remove any examples here in a few days that link to copyrighted songs. This is a serious issue with deeper consequences... This is really concerning...

I understand that. However, according to some sources, the notice given by RIAA was not a proper DMCA.

Check this article: https://techcrunch.com/2020/10/23/the-riaa-is-coming-for-the-youtube-downloaders/

Anyhow, I think it's for the good that you make those changes in the README. It seems like even ytmdl will break incase youtube-dl breaks and that would be a lot of harm. Let's see what happens though, I think perhaps if the ytdl developers counter the claim, GitHub might make the repo available again.

These things are always tricky. I'll grab coffee and dive in. Haha. They found the violation in the unit test code I guess...
Another counterclaim might be -- as pointed out somewhere -- they are using public API to access YT. So, it should have been alright. You never know... I also don't have much knowledge on that "legal" side of copyrights.

Anyway, this calls for re-watching Tom Scott's video on copyrights.

@NISH1001 Thanks for sharing that. As a lot of users are saying, the notice is nothing major and once they remove the copyrighted songs from the test cases, it should be all right.

You can check this reddit post.

Also there are already forks that are being updated so fingers crossed.

This is the fork that is being pointed by some users in the above discussion and it seems like it is being updated to get rid of the copyright issues.

Thanks for the video too. I just updated ytmdl with some non copyrighted songs.
