Just a quick note: in addition to putting citations in the readme and sphinx docs, there are some other options worth considering.

  1. GitHub recently added support for a new CFF format that displays in the repo sidebar. Refs:
  1. Prior to CFF, I think it was common for scientific repos to have a bibtex file in their repo root. It sounds like GitHub might have some limited functionality for that too: Issues mostly about how GitHub displays 'cite this repository' citation-file-format/citation-file-format#343 (comment)
