Would it be possible to use individual templates if there are any?
Like, if a template theme/templates/slug.tpl exists, use it instead of the default custom-page.tpl.

Not really (sorry for the late reply), because it would be useless without the data associated with that page. Unless I'm misunderstanding what you were looking for?
