Why was x=advres:#{value} used instead of -l advres=#{value}?

From Troy:

"-W x=foo:bar" is pretty hinky in general and should be avoided unless there's no other way to do the thing in question. For this specific case, "-l advres=" accomplishes the same thing in a more standard way.
