I'm also wondering if anyone has implemented the crosswalk between .zenodo.json and .codemeta.json, or if Zenodo will end up supporting .codemeta.json at some point in the not-too-distant future.

There was a presentation at the FORCE11 meeting on the Citation File Format (CFF) that starts around 4:15. At around 7:00 there's a slide that talks about CFF/Zenodo integration (rather than CodeMeta/Zenodo integration like I originally remembered). I don't know yet if a CFF file would let us bypass needing .zenodo.json, but it's worth thinking about at least.

For this, cffconvert can change CITATION.cff files into .zenodo.json files.

My inclination would be to try to get the Zenodo/GitHub/CITATION.cff integration to work first before going with .zenodo.json, since CITATION.cff follows a community metadata standard. I still need to look into that.
