Currently you have to click to the sidebar to see indicators for days of the week.
As calendars can be set to start on different days, the calendar view should either have the first letter or few letters above the date number to indicate which day of the week it is, otherwise it could be any day of the week.
Other iOS calendars provide this on-screen visual feedback.
