What version of python are you executing?
What operative system runs your machine?

Can you post the given information when you launch the application with?:

python simple_file_server.py

OK!

First of all your browser or maybe Kali (your security distro), is blocking the css. I supose that it is your browser. Take a look to the console of your browser with F12 key and search warnings and errors.

I am not understanding you when you say that you are not able to access local directories of your machine. You have sent one secreenshot showing your file directory... If the problem is that directory is not the correct and defined in config json, the problem is the wrong configuration. By default config.json uses file folder as root.

Try to execute clean version and try again. I think that it is a good option.
