I have never had this problem before. I was setting up a new favicon for a WordPress site using the WP plugin, and the button to select a master picture for the Windows icon worked, but the button to do so for Apple display would not. I had to settle for using the first letter of the website name, because the image I started with was an opaque square that would not show up well as a silhouette.
