Feature

Display User Status Text in Member's List side panel.

This could be nice for getting a quick read-through of people's statuses.

Quick example:
member list status

Couldn't find a good font in Photoshop, but oh well.

Since there is currently a lot of work being done on user statuses (such as RocketChat/Rocket.Chat#14853), this is a good time to add one extra spot to show them.

Alternatives

Don't have this. Maybe make it optional in the admin or user settings?

I would also like to have something either on hover, or always shown in the user area.

@wreiske I think that would be a pain for hundreds of users, since you'd have to inspect every single one. Ideally, I could just glance at them all while scrolling through, without having to reposition the cursor constantly.

I was thinking this as something that shows anytime you hover over a user's name.

Here's an example of how slack does it when you click a person's name without a status

and one with a status

We could have something like this that shows in a popup on hover that displays some extra info about the user.

I would rather see the status of the user than the last message in the "extended" view.

Showing the custom status in the user list under "Direct Messages" would be a nice feature, maybe as setting where everyone can decide if it's should be displayed or not.

We would love to use this feature to show people which are on vacation, at lunch or in the home office. This information should be visible without clicking or hover each user.

Here's how Skype does it:

Haven't used Skype in half a decade

I do like how the statuses look in the user list for Skype. That's pretty much what I imagined, but also keeping the smaller form factor as shown with users with no status.

I would prefer the status in the members list side panel on the left. It would be enough to show it only for people with whom I have direct messages since these are the guys I have regular chats with.

Sadly there is no progress here. I think this is a very good idea which should be implemented. :)

I am relaunching this subject

It would be interesting to see all the custom status of its contacts in the sidebar, without having to click on a contact to discover its status.

The custom status would be displayed after the name.

This could be a parameter of your choice.

In the professional context, we could immediately see who is on vacation, teleworking, in a meeting, etc.

If we could report these statuses via the API, we could automate them for example with a calendar.

I think my proposal can revive and complete this idea which has not yet been implemented.

We would also love this feature where I work. Even just a show custom status on hover would be enough.
