Is the esp32 also powered from a dc-dc out? If I'm not mistaken then out should be 12v and esp32 should be 5v. am I missing something here? Thanks!

I had the same question, and got this response:

The LM2596 should be set to the voltage you want on your motors (for my setup the sweet spot between torque and noise was around 8V). The ESP32 has built in voltage regulator that should take care of regulating voltage for ESP32.
