A recent issue with some games has been identified by Aaron Perkins
This shows certain games could have a type of cartridge which does not exetend the entire width of the pad to the edge.
Instead, it goes down to a small trace that does not come into contact with the 72 pin connector.

This new cartridge style seems to be on later cartridges and might have had the shorter contacts to ensure the Power/GND pins contacted first.
The little tail on the end is a result of the electroplating process and didn't have any impact on cartridge connections.

Thank you to RedHerring32 for the additional info

A potential fix might be to cut off the tabs on both sides of the top 72 pin connector, the tabs the screws hold down.
I do caution though that without those tabs, more stress will be applied to the solder joints on the backs pins when pulling out cartridges.
The Juice might not be worth the squeeze

If you find one of these games, please reach out ot me so that I can include it on this page.

List of known games that could have this cartridge

  • Some variations of Super Mario Brothers/Duck Hunt
  • Dragon Warrior (We have had 2 reports, 1 with the short pads and one with normal pads.)
  • Donkey Kong CLassic (1 report so far)
  • 1942 (1 report so far)
  • Adventures of Dino Riki (1 report so far)
