It's actually doable, just a bit counter-intuitive! If you right click on the group's header while it's not highlighted/selected, the regular/full dropdown will appear with a rename option.
I think this is by design, and consistent with how nodes work.
Right clicking inside of the group (below the header) won't show any menu. This is consistent with how nodes work. I'm sure this is because it could cause overlap with custom functionality for editors/drawer within the node.
Right clicking the header while the group is highlighted/selected won't show the full menu. This makes sense, since when you select the group, the nodes within the group are also selected, and you are now in a multi-select state. You can actually see that the rename menu appears if the group is empty.
It would be very useful if we could change the node group title.
