To improve startup, you can remove the settings for "quiet" and "splash screen" like this:

  cd /boot/grub
  grep splash
  grep quiet

Find lines like the following:

  kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.17-10-generic ro root=/dev/sda6 quiet splash

Delete the options "quiet" and "splash"
