For digital products and dropship stores then "stock" isn't required so this could also be extracted into a seperate gem

This does require quite a bit of effort to abstract though, since a lot depends on certain attributes related to stock.

I understand totally and for the stores you've built so far stock levels is essential to the business. I'm just thinking about the broader market and how to keep the "shop" as simple as possible which would help with the adoption rate and how much documentation required at this stage :)
