As reported on this WoWInterface thread, chat messages with target marker icons seem to malform messages in chat bubbles.

  • For example, {rt1} hi {rt1} is shown as:

  • a{rt1} hi {rt8}b

  • (edit) specifically any text with an opening curly bracket has this issue.

Reproduced on retail 9.2.0 (42423) and ptr 9.2.0 (42488). vanilla and tbc seem unaffected.
