I have tried both ways to publish site as instructed here: https://quarto.org/docs/publishing/github-pages.html

By publishing directly through main, the profile image does not render.

By publishing using the gh-pages publish command, I gateway in a way that I don't really understand what is happening. I am updating main, and then gh-pages branch is somehow behind on commits but still updates to the changes done in main...

I think what happens is that doing quarto publish gh-pages it then fetches head from main and updates the website this way. That's why in the gh-pages branch the automatic commit that happens "behind the scenes" is Built site for gh-pages_
