In #81 is also en example to put the switcher to the top, where the current number sits.

Here, some very simple and minor changes might already help.

Some ideas:

Make version and version selector more prominent

  • Add Version: or Select version in front of the switcher instead of just v:
  • Make the version selector bigger (without breaking current design which I find consistent and nice to look at). The "Edit me on Github" gets a very fat button. The Related links / version selector is not very prominent.

If the version is kept short in general (e.g. "9.3" or "latest" instead of "latest (9-dev)", there is more room in the bottom.

Add additional hint in left panel

This is not pretty, but a quick attempt to show what I mean!!!

This could be visible on page load and slowly fade.

Currently version is displayed 3 times, display it only once

... or twice, which would be up to the editor of the manual, because the third version is often in the metada section on the start page.

I'm a fan of displaying the version only once on the page instead of three times and having a clear way for selecting it there. The left panel makes sense to me. Whether it should be on the bottom or in the title - in the title may be more prominent, but it is unexpected. I think we should do it like Readthedocs does it, but make selecting the version more visually obtrusive. So IMHO it should stay where it is and the version in title be removed.

If someone must add the version in the metadata on the startpage, they could include an additional tag which would be replaced with version links by the renderer. Otherwise it would be too much work to maintain this.
