DDS is a proprietary format and requires a form of license that is forbidden by the documentation submitted with the original project. Further it is a bad idea for an Open Source project to advocate the use of proprietary software, simply from an ideological stand point. However it also makes sense to use Open Source software from a security point of view.
This may sacrifice some speed and efficiency due to the loss of Microsoft's specialist compression tool but it will mean that we're no longer reliant on a corporation who may have ulterior aims and objectives.
