In my opinion this is too niche of a feature to be included. It would add complexity without providing real benefits. @opusforlife2 what do you think?

I obviously don't know about the coding side of things, so I can't comment on that, but from a UI perspective, if we implement this suggestion I saw somewhere... one sec.... Ah. #3825, yeah. So if that feature request is taken into consideration, then switching layouts could be just one more option in the long press menu for tabs.
