Checklist

What feature do you want?

Make thumbnails of marked as watched videos dull and dimmed to reduce screen noise and for better distinguishable UX. Currently Newpipe just have a red bar at the bottom of the video thumbnail which is hard to distinguish. I assume this will also help #7606 and compliment any UX improvements that are planned.

Why do you want this feature?

When you are in your feed or your groups there is too much noise on the screen. With that much content sticking out for attention, it is hard to distinguish marked as watched videos and the one you haven't watched.. Making the watched video thumbnails dimmed/dull would make it easy to distinguish the watched videos.

This would seriously make a world of difference for me.

How Newpipe does it now (Black, Dark, Light themes):

black-marked

dark-marked

light-marked

How it could look like with marked as watched videos made dull/dimmed:

Hope this helps understand how this could improve the UX.

Though this doesn't resolve this issue, you can press on the eye icon in the app bar to hide already-watched videos from the feed.

@mhmdanas - Thanks for mentioning that. But not all videos that are already watched should be hidden. Especially tech related videos or informative content which you would want to watch again. Also, hiding the watched videos means endless doomscroll scenario. Which I don't feel is ideal. This AFAIK would be an easier fix to all of that.

On a personal note, toning it down like this gives me, a user some breather space and less anxiety of wanting to watch all the videos. Hope these are also experienced by at least some others.

How should partially watched videos be treated? Is your suggestion only for fully watched videos? In that case, "Remove watched" icon might work for both fully and partially watched videos.

@SameenAhnaf Dimming it down for partially watched videos shouldn't hurt. It means you have watched the video. Or to be a bit more clear, "you have clicked on the video thumbnail before". Irrespective of whether it is partial or full shouldn't matter. Also going with the exact literal words from the UI, you are doing "mark as watched". Not mark as fully watched or mark as partially watched. While there is an assumption that it means you watched the video fully, that will not be the case always. Watched can mean watched the first couple of mins, watched half the video, finished 3/4th of the video or watched fully.

This is also where the red bar has been useful. Cos the red horizontal bar at the bottom of the thumbnail already shows how much of the video you have watched. So dimmed video thumbnail with the red bar showing how much video you have watched should provide enough info for the user.

I think this is a helpful feature. I'd add that shrinking the thumbnail slightly relative to other thumbnails could work, as a visual cue that's not impacted by the thumbnail itself (i.e. already dim or blurred). Personally I would use this for finished videos, so I can quickly spot ones I haven't seen if I'm archive binging
