Improve runnel to make it possible to compare two structures for compatibility

It would be great if runnel structures could be serialized (one way or another) and some feature that checks if two structures are forward/backward compatible (e.g.: check that the indices did not change) be written.

This way, we could insert into our code repositories the structures of the different versions in serialized format and add some tests that assert nothing gets broken.
