I might be wrong, but I don't believe Polymer's ready callback will run if you remove the element and re-insert it deeper in the outline tree. In which case it will still have the old level. Seems bad?

Thanks for raising this and the related #26 -- it is something that we recently very briefly discussed (in #21) and I'm still reading around, though I think the potential solution mentioned there (mutation observers) should work. It's certainly something that we will be focusing on, now we've got the extension element and have finally settled on a name for this thing ;-).
I wonder if Polymer has some sort of "inserted into the real DOM" and "removed from the real DOM" callback, since I think that would catch all of the cases you care about.
