Acpi

Because of this errors

[    6.094574] ACPI Error: [\_SB_.PCI0.GFX0.DD02._BCL] Namespace lookup failure, AE_NOT_FOUND (20170831/psargs-364)
[    6.094590] ACPI Error: Method parse/execution failed \_SB.PCI0.RP05.PEGP.DD02._BCL, AE_NOT_FOUND (20170831/psparse-550)

Solution is claimed in https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=1716467#p1716467 to add libata.noacpi=1 into the grub options

Not true, it error is still there

Crash on boot

Setting up debug on the kernel parameters I see that the crash happens on

fb: switching to inteldrmfb from EFI VGA

one solution is from https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=234659 claims as first explained from https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=234646 to blacklist nvidiafb.

Change the boot parameters in /etc/default/grub

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="debug modprobe.blacklist=nvidiafb,nouveau"

This seems good, especially since I don’t need nvidiafb as my chip is not supported https://cateee.net/lkddb/web-lkddb/FB_NVIDIA.html

other alternative from reddit https://www.reddit.com/r/archlinux/comments/732hp4/arch_freezing_after_413_kernel_update/ is to use intel_iommu=igfx_off as a kernel option. This might not be my best option as I mostly use the intel chip for the graphics but experimenting on using the nvidia one is still something to configure correctly.

Crash on shutdown after suspend

Like previous item. Something with the graphics card. Aparently the nouveau kernel driver once loaded is giving the crash on shutdown after suspend. Disabling the module seems to fix the problem.

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="debug modprobe.blacklist=nvidiafb,nouveau"

Nvidia

I was quite happy only using the intel chip for graphics. But when in need for the nvidia gpu is just hell to get it working. It looks stable if I add the config from https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/NVIDIA_Optimus#Lockup_issue_.28lspci_hangs.29

Change the boot parameters in /etc/default/grub

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="debug modprobe.blacklist=nvidiafb,nouveau acpi_osi=! acpi_osi=\"Windows 2009\""

and keep the card in performance not adaptive config using nvidia-settings

  • Unfortunately I can’t load performance setting automatically and for the moment I launch nvidia-settings to setup the performance
  • Surprisingly suspend works
  • Back-light is not working
