When we manually register the "Translate Z" widget does not update and it is 0. This is because in order to translate in z we need to rotate the 3D image and show a different slice. When we use the mouse wheel, we are only plotting the "diff" volume slices along the third dimension (sweep). This process is not clear and can be described better in the instructions under the viewer.
